2023 Dodge Challenger Overview

The 2023 Dodge Challenger is a roomy sports car with a wide variety of powerful engine options under the hood. Unlike many other competitors in the class, the cabin is spacious enough for five people. Adults can comfortably sit in the first and second rows, and there’s even a large trunk at the rear to carry your things.

However, the attraction for most Challenger buyers is how much horsepower it packs under the hood. As we’ll show below, even the Challenger’s base engine packs an impressive punch and can shift this vehicle off the line at a swift pace.

Challenger Zero-To-60 Times by Engine Type

The base engine in the 2023 Challenger is a V-6 unit that’s capable of putting out 303 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. It propels the Challenger from zero to 60 mph in a rapid 5.3 seconds. This engine is available in your choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, making it a good option if you plan on using your Challenger for day-to-day driving rather than just for speed.

The next step up is a big 5.7-liter V-8 engine that can churn out 375 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the base engine, which is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the V-8 comes with a six-speed manual. In addition, the V-8 is only available with rear-wheel drive. This setup cuts half a second off your zero to 60 time, shifting the Challenger from a standstill to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds.

A larger 6.4-liter V-8 is your next option. It cranks out 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. This unit cuts the zero to 60 mph time to a mere 4.2 seconds. Like the smaller V-8, this engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission and is available with rear-wheel drive only.

The last engine option is a supercharged V-8 that pumps out an incredible 717 horsepower and 656 lb-ft of torque. This 6.2-liter unit can take your Challenger up to 60 mph in a remarkable 3.7 seconds. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes with rear-wheel drive only.

The 6.2-liter engine is upgraded with even higher horsepower numbers for the SRT Super Stock and SRT Demon trims. The SRT Super Stock achieves 807 horsepower and 707 lb-ft of torque. This helps the Challenger to break the 60 mph mark in only 3.3 seconds. The eye-watering 1,025 horsepower that the SRT Demon puts out moves the Challenger from zero to 60 mph in 1.66 seconds.

Other Challenger Performance Features

If you choose one of the racetrack-ready Challenger trims, you’ll see high-performance features almost everywhere on this vehicle. You can expect street-legal drag racing tires, high-performance Brembo brakes, and adaptive suspension. The highest trims can get you extra racing features such as launch control.

In the SRT Hellcat trims, you can remove the rear seats to lighten the Challenger to increase the speed. If you can’t afford to lose the second row, there are other performance features you can opt for in a variety of packages. For instance, you can get painted 20-inch aluminum wheels, performance steering, performance tires, and a 3.09 or 3.90 axle with the Performance Handling Group package.

2023 Challenger Trim Levels and Engine Options

There are seven main trim levels in the Challenger. Your choice of trim will impact the engine you can have under the hood. The first two trims, the SXT and GT, are equipped with the base engine. If you step up to the GT trim, you gain upgraded cloth upholstery, paddle shifters, and performance brakes and steering.

The R/T trim is the first in the lineup with a stronger engine: the 5.7-liter V-8. In addition, it features a performance exhaust and a tuned-up rear axle. You can choose between a six-speed manual transmission, which comes standard, or an eight-speed automatic. The R/T Scat Pack trim comes with the 6.4-liter V-8 engine. It’s the first trim with Brembo performance brakes and launch control. You’ll also gain an 8.4-inch infotainment screen, heated front seats, and a six-speaker premium stereo.

With the SRT Hellcat, you get the 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine. In addition, it comes with an adjustable Bilstein suspension, a heavy-duty differential, an open-air intake, and six-piston performance brakes. The SRT Hellcat Redeye trim has the same engine, but it gets an upgrade to 797 horsepower. The SRT Hellcat Redeye and SRT Super Stock trims share many of the same interior features as the SRT Hellcat trim.

If you’re struggling to decide which trim is best for your needs, you may want to consider your priorities. If you want a car that’s faster than most in reaching 60 mph but still has plenty of practical features for daily driving, the SXT or GT trims could be right for you. The R/T and R/T Scat Pack trims offer you a combination of road driving and racetrack features. When you reach the SRT trims, the focus shifts more to the racetrack, although you’ll still be able to take your Dodge Challenger on the road.
